Mount Rainier Up Close

I’m not sure what altitude I was at when I took this picture; I want to say it was around 3,000 feet. Ten minutes after we descended, we were enmeshed in that fog cloud bank you see at its “foot,” and the skies didn’t clear up again until I emerged on the western edge of the park, about an hour later.

The day before I shot this, a group went climbing up the mountain and perished – possibly in a small avalanche. The route they took is on the other side of that ridge on the right (this is the southeast side). Its serenity is rather deceptive, no?
